Looks like a hat to me...
I'm feeling ambivalent about my hat. Why do I always forget that Alpaca has certain qualities and "give" and "forgiveness" aren't among them? And why do I always think "A new skill? Let me use alpaca to try it." It doesn't look too bad in the pictures, but you can see that the stitches aren't very even. It doesn't help that the yarns are two different weights either. I got about an inch into the colorwork and pulled it out and tried again. At this point, I'm having to resolve that it's as good as it gets, and blocking will help, and the yarn is fuzzy anyway, which will hide some of it.
The next question is how to end it and when. Yarn supplies are holding up. I could just finish the edge with another braid and let it be like a pill-box type, or I could make it longer and make it like a cloche, or I could put some kind of two-color ribbing on it. Suggestions are welcome.
Update: I put on the hat to see how I felt about it. I think I'll keep going with the pattern until there are two leaves going in each direction, then maybe try to get it to flare out a bit and end it with a braid, maybe. The braid was kind of a pain on such a large piece since the yarn twists up on one round and untwists on the second. It got really twisted for the first round. But I think it's necessary for balance.

I like the idea of ending it with a braid, but I guess that could be used with a pillbox or a cloche (maybe the cloche would have 2 braids- one at the end of the FI and one at the edge?). It looks great, alpaca and all:)
It's looking very cute! I think a cloche would be nice.
And don't worry - unenvenness can be fixed with blocking!
It says pill box to me, but which you get more wear out of? It's gorgeous! I just did Alpaca mittens and they blocked beautifully. Don't be too discouraged about that yet. Wait until blocking.
I have no suggestions, just wanted to say that it looks lovely!
I SO want to see it as a pill box hat
