Stash Rules

So what exactly constitutes Stash?

If a quantity of yarn is intended for something specific, yet is stored away, is it stash? Or is only truly random yarn with no destiny considered stash? What about sock yarn? If you know it's going to be a sock, but you don't know what pattern you'll use yet, how does that count?

What say ye?

Personally, anything that's in a shelf/basket/bag, etc. that isn't on needles or setting with a pattern/needles is in my "stash".

(So I've got this thing where I buy because it's "pretty" or "soft" but it turns into something "real" someday...or at least in theory!)

Gosh, those folks are tough ;-) Why couldn't we have another category like UnStarted Objects?

Stash is only stash if it was bought with no purpose or thought. Stash is that ball of yarn you buy to support a Not LYS you visit, but can't find anything that really grabs you. Stash is that yarn you get in trade, something you just wanted, but had no clear intent for. Stash is the yarn you buy when you are at a fiber festival or knitting convention. Too good a deal to pass up, so you buy a bunch of it. Enough to possibly make a shawl, sweater, etc, but nothing came to mind when you bought it. All other things are projects, not to be confused with stash.

I agree with the first 2 commenters. I believe that stash is anything that is not on the needles, because even if you buy with a purpose in mind at that time, by the time it gets around to actually knitting the pattern you might have changed your mind and put it away. So anything I'm not currently working on is stash. That's my definition anyway.

Although, I'd like to side with Chris, I consider anything not on needles to be stash. I have an additional problem that I'll buy yarn to make something and by the time it actually comes down to it, I don't like the original pattern anymore. Oops...

I miss you!!! I'm going to try to join the knitters tomorrow. It will keep me from working all night.

Sock yarn is all "queue yarn" since it will become socks!
