I recalculated all of the measurements using the actual stitch and row counts and the gauge instead of converting the schematics from centimeters to inches, and it came out much better. I'm so relieved because while it didn't take that long to finish these two pieces (about two weeks) I had already woven in the ends, and taking them apart to re-knit them would have been an enormous pain.
Well, I'm off to pack my new luggage!
